Borgloon
Luckily on Easter Monday, the weather was fine, so we went to our neighbouring province, Limburg, to the town of Borgloon, famous for it's fruit (appels, pears, cherries, strawberries).
We could visit an old steamdriven syrup factory, built in 1878, where thick syrup was made from the juice of appels, pears, cherries and sugar beet. The oldest part will become a museum, after restauration, but in the newer part, there still is a traditional syrup factory. We could also buy different kinds of syrup, and apple juice, and enjoyed pancakes with syrup, delicious !
The town is very cosy, with a lovely townhall. We also saw the local figure "Syrup Licker" with his apple head, pear body and a syrup pot on his head. And we discovered, that there is an apple named after us !! It's the "Ceuleman" (with "C"), a green apple, which, in earlier times, was exported to Cologne (Keulen), hence the name. The apple is a rarety now, only found in some private orchards, but there is a statue of the apple in Borgloon.
Unfortunately, because of the long Winter, it was too early to see the big orchards in blossom, but we'll go back in a few weeks time.
