En ze waren héél lekker !! (LOL)
I finally found out more about those typical Antwerp plum-pies :
My baker didn't know when the tradition started, but he knows why :
On Ash Wednesday, after those crazy Carnival days, and at the start of the 40 days of Lent, the real Catholics went to church to get a black cross on their forehead as a penance(it used to be real ash in early times); people who were not so religious, but also wanted to follow the tradition of something black, used to eat a 'black' plum-pie instead.
But I believe that even the Catholics will have enjoyed those pies, we Flemish love our food !
And I guess even the Catholic priest might have enjoyed his plum-pie !!!
So there you have it, the real Antwerp plum pie : some bakers make them with a dough lattice, others without, but it's always with that 'black' plum-puree.
And they were delicious !!! (LOL)
